Cable ties are a handy way to ensure your electrical cabling is kept safe and tidy, making them easier to identify and manage. Cromwell stock a wide range of cable ties from brands like HellermannTyton, Edison and KrimpTerm.
Cable ties are designed to wrap up bundles of cables keeping them secure and out the way. They can also be used to tie groups of cables for identification purposes, this is especially useful in environments like server rooms where there are multiple cables, helping minimise the risk of cabling being knocked loose or being unplugged in error.
Having multiple cables trailing around a space, whether it be at home or in a work environment can be hazardous, not only creating tripping hazards but snagging on cables can damage the cables or equipment they're connected to. Cable tidies help by bundling cables together to form neat and compact groupings, keeping them neat and out of the way.
• Standard - Sometimes referred to as zip ties these cable ties are made of nylon and feature teeth the thread through an eyelet in the opposite end of the tie. It is then pulled tight and can secure large groupings of cables. They are usually single use meaning they will have to be cut off to remove them. Specialist versions of these ties can also be used outdoors with both UV resistant and waterproof properties.
• Heat stabilised nylon - These ties are used in environments where heat is generated and where standard ties would perish due to the harsher conditions.
• Resealable - These operate much like a standard cable tie with the added advantage of being able to be opened up to add more cabling if necessary.
• Twist - These cable ties feature a plastic coating with a metal strip inside. The metal strip can be bent and twisted around the bundle of cabling securing them in place. They can be used multiple times; their only drawback is the metal strip will weaken overt time and will eventually snap.
• Adjustable hook and loop - These cable ties feature a strip with a hook and loop fastening. They are ideal for securing multiple cables and have the option to add more cables to the bundle as they are resealable.
• Environment - In environments where there is a lot of heat or the ties will be exposed to the elements, ensure that you pick a cable tie that can withstand the conditions.
• Single or multiple use - Do you intend to add cabling to a workspace, example will you be adding peripherals to your PC etc? If so, single use cable might be a tad limiting.
Can zip ties melt if used with PC cabling?
Most nylon zip ties have a high melting point and should be able to withstand the temperatures involved with electrical equipment. In environments like server rooms where heat can be generated standard ties might become brittle over time.
Can you use multiple zip ties joined together?
Yes, if you have a particularly thick bundle of cable you wish to secure together you can do so. Insert one end of the cable tie through the eyelet of the other and you have effectively doubled the length of the tie.
